ARCC National Chaplain, Rev Colin Watts, this month celebrates 10 years of support to the racing industry.
“When I first started, the most frequent comment I heard was ‘I never knew we had a chaplain’. But I almost never hear that now. People are very much aware of the chaplains wherever I go.”
“Chaplaincy is best described as a ministry of ‘presence’, of literally ‘being there’ for people in need. We give of ourselves, of our time – whether that’s a listening ear, an encouraging word, a familiar face, or a helping hand, it’s about being there where people are at, and getting alongside them.”
“It is a great privilege to be able to serve the people of the racing industry in this way. I am thankful for the support of so many – in particular Racing NSW and the ATC – but also a myriad of individuals and organisations who value what we do, and help us to continue.”
“Racing is a family, and you see that best when people are in need. However, because the industry is so intensive, many do not have the time to provide the care they would like to. And so they look to the chaplains to provide that support on their behalf. You really sense that you are representing the industry as a whole.”
Leading Sydney trainer, Chris Waller, commented “Colin is a fantastic man who is always there for those who need him. He is an unsung hero who plays an important role in modern day life; he is there for people to talk to whether it be for advice or someone going through a difficult situation. It is refreshing to see a smiling face whether you need his help or not.”
